International Volunteer Day takes place every December 5 to recognize the dedication and contribution of volunteers around the world. This recognition holiday is so exciting because it is celebrated in more than half the countries of the world! The holiday was designated by the United Nations in 1985, and it’s exciting to celebrate voluntary efforts across the globe.
Volunteers make a huge difference in our organizations and communities, so recognizing them multiple times a year (International Volunteer Day and
National Volunteer Week in April) makes a lot of sense. They certainly deserve it! Celebrate International Volunteer Day with one – or all! – of these volunteer appreciation ideas.
1. Send an ePraise
Our
ePraise e-card system is an easy and free way to recognize volunteers on International Volunteer Day. Choose from over 100 different cards for the right message for your volunteers, add a personal note, and schedule it to be delivered on December 5.
2. Host an International-Themed Luncheon
Invite all your volunteers to an international-themed lunch to celebrate. Feature cuisine from around the world and ask different volunteers to share information about their cultural background. At the lunch, present volunteers with
award certificates to thank them for their service.
3. Share Volunteer Stories
International Volunteer Day is all about recognizing the difference volunteering makes in the global community. Share stories about your organization and volunteers with the community! Send a press release to the local newspaper and TV news stations about the holiday and your volunteers’ accomplishments. Post stories online, too, through blogs and social media. If you have a volunteer award, recognize the award recipient’s through press releases and online postings.
4. Mail Thank You Cards
Volunteers are from all walks of life and locations to serve your organization, which means it can be difficult to gather them all together at once. Send your appreciation to volunteers to acknowledge International Volunteer Day with a
greeting card. Write a personal thank you note to each volunteer.
5. Volunteer!
There’s no better way to demonstrate the power of volunteering than to volunteer! Use
International Volunteer Day to encourage your volunteers and recruit new ones with a special volunteer project. Provide lunch or refreshments and organize a team of volunteers to tackle a building improvement, office cleaning, or paper filing project that’s been waiting for attention. Make the day full of fun and recognition to encourage more volunteer participation now and in the future!
