"Recognition is something that our site is striving to improve as our number of employees increases. To encourage people to recognize others more often, I created a Recognition Lunch 'N Learn that is interactive. In the session, I call upon the experiences of the participants to highlight what is wonderful about recognition, how they like to be recognized and what it feels like to not be recognized. At the end of the session, there are two big take-aways:
One is that I give each participant a "Recognition Starter Kit." In that kit are various things they can use to recognize others such as Pocket Praise(R) cards, various Baudville pens, blank index cards stamped with Baudville stamps such as "You Rock," "Thank You" and "High 5," candy bars, Baudville ID holders and various other goodies! They love getting a "prize" at the end of the seminar, and there is always a lot of energy and fun associated with it.
Each bag contains a card titled "Your Recognition Day Is..." and on that day, they are "required" to spend 10 minutes recognizing someone. In addition, each bag has a series of cards with tips on recognizing such as "Ways to Recognize," "30 phrases YOU can use to Recognize Others," and a list of recognition websites such as Baudville's Recognition Tip of the Month.
The second thing people take away from the seminar is that everyone is required to write "recognition promises." They are handed a card with the words "I WILL" and then have to fill in the rest with their promise (i.e. I will recognize my co-workers in fun and creative ways every time I see them do something great).
It is great to see the Recognition Promises and the "Your Recognition Day Is..." cards at people's desks. Most importantly, the people really believe in recognition and have helped to make us better at recognizing!"
