What Does Greatness Mean to You?





You know that the minimum requirement is that you have the right people with the right skills to complete the work at hand.


MUCH like Maslow's hierarchy of needs, once your basic departmental needs are met, you can start focusing on the more complex levels of growth.

Do you have an adequate balance of personalities and behavioral types? Among those different types, is there the possibility to impel each of them to greatness? What does greatness look like, anyway?

Greatness is an encompassing, multifaceted value made up of several characteristics. You might have a top achiever who doesn't help others, a hard worker who doesn't want to be part of the team, or a star performer who needs an attitude adjustment. They have moments of greatness, but their moments of notso-greatness can cancel those out.

How can you encourage these high potential team members to improve in the areas they're lacking while maintaining high levels where they already excel?

It could be as easy as just letting them know. Start by providing your team with your definition of greatness. As you identify and reward each person for their facets that shine, you'll also reveal those that need a little polish.

And as they recognize the need to step up in those areas and work to earn your acknowledgement, they'll feel the pride in accomplishing what they didn't know they were capable of: Greatness.

And that means once they own it, you do too.
