Year-End Employee Morale Boosters

It’s no secret that employee morale has taken a severe hit this year. Responsibilities and stress have increased in workplaces while recognition and appreciation decreased. At this point, you may be faced with a team that’s a little down in the dumps, and that’s no way to end the year. Giving your team a morale boost now is affordable, easy and – not to mention – fun for everyone. 


Why you should do it: The talent management world is predicting a major workforce shift once the economy recovers. One study found as many as 55% of current employees are planning on changing jobs once the economy recovers. How you treat your people now will influence their decision to stay or go then. High employee morale and satisfaction will help you retain your top talent.


What you should do: Your goal is to let employees know their contributions are valued and remind them that your organization is a great place to work. Considering 64% of working Americans leave their jobs because they don’t feel appreciated, this communication is huge. To accomplish this, we’ve come up with some sure-fire employee morale boosting ideas. All you have to do it bring them to life.


Employee Potluck. When you fill up a conference room or break area with homemade goodies, your employees will not be able to resist the temptation to spend time together. Organize a potluck for your team, and provide the plates, napkins and drinks as a goodwill offering. Encourage the entire team to take time to eat together (if possible), and don’t stress about the work on your desk. Taking a half hour to reconnect with your team will be well worth it. Introduce some recognition to your team building moment by creating a paper plate award for each employee. Decorate paper plates with the award title – the sillier the better – and present them publicly during your potluck.


Give Thanks.  You may have let your recognition programs and habits run dry this year, but don’t wait for that New Year’s resolution to start up again. Make it a personal goal to write thank you notes to every team member for their contributions this year.
