Decide What Workplace Reputation You Want

In my Internal Customer Service Workshop, I ask the audience members to describe the workplace reputation they would like to have. Then we spend some time strategically planning what they would need to do to develop that workplace reputation.

This is an assignment I think every employee should receive their first day on the job or at least at the beginning of every New Year. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone took time to reflect on their workplace reputation and how they impact their coworkers?

We have all had coworkers who had no clue what a negative workplace reputation they had. They’re the Wahmbulance drivers who moan and complain about everything.

They get out of their car every morning with their mental list of all the things that are going wrong in their life. They drive in on the wahmbulance screaming wah wah wah wah …

On the other hand, you can probably think of someone who is great to work with and has a positive workplace reputation. They always do their fair share; they don’t complain about things, they are positive and upbeat. Time seems to fly when they are around because you enjoy their company so much.

Which category do you fall into?  When people see your name on the list, what is their reaction…Alright!  Or Oh Brother!

I wonder how different it would be if we started out each job deciding that we wanted to leave a positive impression with our co-workers, and then we worked strategically to garner a positive workplace reputation.

Decide what you want to be known for. Then take full responsibility for creating your workplace reputation!
