Santa Still Watches in July: How Christmas in July Stands as an Employee Recognition Reminder

Christmas time is known for many things: family, traditions, and (most commonly) gift-giving. The long-lasting legacy of Santa Claus coming down the chimney flue after being transported by flying reindeer is seen differently by each person, but one thing generally remains the same—presents. This holiday has crept down the chimney of businesses each year with employees receiving some sort of recognition come December.  Looking different from place to place, winter holiday tidings at work sometimes come with more paid time off, bonuses, branded merchandise, and more. This season serves as a reminder to employees that their employers have appreciated the work they have been doing the past 12 months.

As the year-long countdown to holiday time winds down, it is important to remember that recognition is not set in stone to December. Christmas in July, celebrated on July 25 each year, began its tradition in 1933 at a small summer camp in North Caroline. From then on, this day has gained traction worldwide as a summertime celebration, and businesses have capitalized on the idea of running sales and promotions on the theme.

While Christmas in July may not be a true halfway point between January 1 and December 25, it is a reminder for people to take a second to stop, think, and recognize. In the workplace, there are many times when projects, tasks, and deadlines take precedence over employee recognition, causing burnout and high turnover rates. Christmas in July acts as a reminder for employees and HR professionals to bring that typical warm holiday recognition into another part of the year.

In 2025, Christmas in July falls on Friday, July 25th. As this date quickly approaches, take a second to remind yourself about everything you love most about Christmas in December. While Santa might not come leaving nicely wrapped boxes under an already decorated Fraser Fir, gifting is a year-round habit. Don’t wait until the end of year to say ‘thank you’ to your employees but instead surprise them with some summer gifts this year.
