The Impact of Recognition on Nonprofit Organizations

The Impact of Recognition on Nonprofit Organizations

Implementing employee recognition into the everyday efforts of businesses has been shown to have an overall positive impact on those enterprises, no matter the expertise. Nonprofit organizations, however, face unique challenges in in their employee recognition initiatives. Nonprofits have limited access to money and general resources, making employee gifts and recognition an added stress for management and leaders. Luckily, recognition does not have to be expensive.

A Nonprofit is “an entity that operates for a charitable, educational, or public purpose, rather than financial benefit of its owners or shareholders,” meaning their resources are used to benefit the community in some way. The people that work at nonprofits are doing so with a helpful and passionate intent. They are not looking for flashy merchandise and awards, but that doesn’t mean they should not get them.

The best way to implement everyday recognition in a nonprofit space is to make sure workers know they’re seen. They are there to do good work, but continuing a specific mission is made easier with an extra boost. A simple ‘thank you,’ a hand-written note, or even a high-five would suffice as an effort to show employees support. The impact this has? Unimaginable.

Nonprofits work toward a mission. Whether it is for a charity or a community program, these organizations are out to better the world around them. The workforce employed there typically have the same vision. By boosting morale in an office or team environment the staff are encouraged to put their best work forward, and better-produced work = better community impact. Recognition fosters a collaborative and engaging environment, influencing employees to build relationships with their peers. With positive trends in employee engagement, nonprofit organizations are supporting more meaningful work, and producing more charitable impact.

You would never think that a fish-bump after a team presentation would help a charity, would you? Employee recognition is more than a friendship in the cubicle, it has real, impactful meaning.
